European Commission is laying out €4.5 million research funds on a wind-wave project with total budget of €6 million (USD 7.9 million) – acronym H2OCEAN. The aim of the research consortium is to develop a platform for harvesting wind and wave power and convert on-site the excess energy into hydrogen.
Apart from the relatively unique feature of combining different power generation activities into a shared multi-use platform, H2OCEAN explores the transmission of offshore-generated renewable electrical energy through hydrogen. This approach, if successful, can help to solve two important challenges for offshore energy generation
- Grid imbalance resulting from transmission bottlenecks between the location of energy production and consumption, and
- High cost of under-sea cable transmission system, which takes substantial investments to develop
The research is scheduled for 3 years and will be run by a consortium of companies in wind and wave energy, as well as, research institutes. At the bottom of the post you can find a list of participants.
To see post on another European Commission funded project go to € 7.4 Million Research on Planning, Designing and Operation of Offshore Platforms or excellent opportunity (also supported by EC) for free testing of wave and wind energy equipment Free Tests of Wave Energy Converter’s Electric System.
